The Ball House
"Remembering Anacortes Real Estate of the Past"
The old broken down Ball Farm House that sat along highway 20 her entire life always
intrigued Charlene Janz. She first noticed it as a young child driving with her
family and it soon became the landmark she would look for over the years to know
that they were almost home.
As a teenager in Anacortes Washington (West of Mount Vernon and north of Oak Harbor),
Charlene worked in the local fields picking strawberries and cucumbers. On one particular
day that summer she became very excited as the berry bus rolled up to the fields
surrounding the Old Ball Homestead. She had heard so many stories about the house
and now she was right there up close and all she could do was stare at it. Through
out the day, she found herself continually mesmerized by it and had to keep reminding
herself that she was there to pick berries.
Charlene had heard many stories about The Ball House being haunted, she also heard
about transients that may be living there and that it could literally fall over
at any moment. While working, she watched and waited to see anything, any ghosts,
any movement, any piece of wood that may fall off of the old farmhouse. But nothing
happened. There was nothing to watch... nothing to see. But it still intrigued her,
it was part of her childhood, part of the where she lived growing up with Anacortes
real estate.
As an adult Charlene still looked at that old house each time she went over the
bridges, and then one day it was gone…. There wasn’t anything left of it, not a
stick of wood. It was like it just disappeared over night. They say it went down
in a wind storm in the middle of the night, but who knows. She still does not know
what really happened to the old farmhouse, that is still such a big memory for Charlene
now a realtor growing up with Anacortes properties.
